3 Ways the Decluttering Process Needs to Change

Let’s face it, decluttering isn’t a clean process– it often leaves us feeling tired, sweaty, and mentally drained.

When we are decluttering, the focus is often on what we are removing from our lives. While it is important to be aware of what we are letting go of, that’s not where all of our focus should be.

According to the Secret, what we focus on will persist. And when the focus is negative, it persists and attracts that energy into our lives. Some non-clutter examples:

  • Weight loss and health: It’s far more effective to focus on being healthier and at the perfect weight for you (as well as having self-love) rather than beating yourself up emotionally over it.
  • Reducing debt: If you want to eliminate debt, think instead about the money you will receive to help you pay for those expenses.

Of course, I am by no means an expert on these topics, but I have found this concept to be true for organizing. When we focus on what we’re getting rid of, what we’re throwing away… it becomes a more difficult process to let go.

So what can we do differently to increase our chances of getting (and staying) organized as we declutter?

Get proper closure.

During the decluttering process, it’s still important to focus on what you’re letting go of; it does you no good to declutter absent-mindedly, lest you throw something away that you want to keep. However, go through a closure process as you are letting go of these items. Realize that these items have served their purpose in your life and are ready to be let go. Any fond memories associated with them will remain in your heart. You are both ready to move on.

This closure process will invite the proper positive energy you need as you’re letting go, making decluttering much easier.

Give some attention to what you are keeping.

After some decluttering, you might take a look at all of the trash bags and donation boxes and think “Wow, I’m getting rid of so much!” It may even feel really good, like a weight has been lifted from your shoulders. And that’s normal!

However, also remember what you’re keeping and appreciate that too. Giving these items some proper care and attention will attract the positive energy back to you. There’s a reason you decided to keep these items in your life!

Treasure them– not in a materialistic way, but rather, in a way of abundance. You have enough. You are enough.

Channel some energy of appreciation for both types of items.

I believe that everything comes into our lives for a reason. It is up to us how long they will remain and when they can be gracefully let go. Whatever and whenever we decide, it is essential to maintain an energy of gratitude and appreciation. Perhaps an item was useful to you at some point, but no longer serves you. Make your peace and let go of it. Or maybe you feel guilty about an item that reminds you of unfinished business. If that business is no longer what you want to do, let go of it with peace in your heart, knowing that you are making room for items that do serve you and your current needs. Keep items that bring you joy and help you live the life you want, and appreciate them staying in your life.

When you start to make these kinds of decisions and channel this kind of positive energy toward anything that enters your life, you will start to take the actions necessary to sustain a life that serves you, one that makes you feel content and at peace. These feelings will bring forth a feeling of abundance that will aid you in maintaining an organized life and space.
